not a lot more I can add on this other than I loved playing it and I managed to get the new islands that appear without the requisite green giants spammed all over the place
This is a very well done game. It's very simple yet allows for a considerable amount of strategy.
After a couple times through, I found that the additional 'mystery' islands really didn't add to the game; once you know what to anticipate, it's just a matter of preparing for them. Now I play until Japan is conquered and quit before the islands come into play. Ignoring the added islands also allows you to use the other territory upgrades and forget about the green giants.
For additional challenge, try starting as a landlocked prefecture. In my best performance, I ended up between two larger neighbors but was able to wage a war of attrition until I could defeat them. (Attack, kill a few, and withdraw before losing troops.)

The game could be balanced a bit more, since the best thing to do is just spam samurai, but it's very addicting.
The super enemy that pops in at the end is a great spin too.
