The abilities add a little flavor to the enemies, rather than just having difficult maps. Pay close attention to the abilities to figure out how to plan. I did not have issues with units appearing for no reason (certain enemies gain units from things, which is where I think those are being seen.)
Upgrades will be maxed before the end just with a straight run, and no maps were too difficult for a straight run.
The biggest tricks to the game are learning the computer attack priorities, after which most maps are very easy.
Quick reflexes to grab neutral planets during the shielded phase is important.
3/5. Not much new compared to similar games, but a little variety that makes it slightly above par IMO.
upgrading using the replay of older battles seems to be the way forward but even then you need to do a lot of replaying to get the points to upgrade in the higher level upgrades as they do what appears to be almost universal in upgrade costs, they spiral upwards quite fast and high

overall retarded game even in its genre and luck plays big part in winning due opponents abilities (player doesn't have same or any at all).
