Anyway, it seems I've encountered a bug, game wants to lock up and freeze on day 3, has happened a few times now. I give this game a 3/5.

Upgrade stars are from accomplishing achievements. You can view your achievements and figure out which next will be easiest to get the next star.
overall very nice game but after a while it becomes boring since not much to do than grind to get upgrade stars (nowhere is said how those are gotten aka how many ships needs to be destroyed or how many trades needs to do to get star (apparently those are supposed to get enuf to upgrade everything)).
Cannons are free, unless you use the power ups (x1.5 damage, or x3 damage.)
Most of the game will be spent hunting ships to get battle points to research with.
The order of the towns is not intuitive, although it mostly seems to follow the northern side of the map. You can do them out of order, as the 4th town is a pretty easy win, and from there you can simply farm ships until you are nearly ready for the endgame.
3/5. It's a fairly simple version, but well done for what it is.
